Swedish Massage refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles, by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. It was created at the turn of the century by Henry Peter Ling in Sweden. It involves the use of kneading, stroking, friction, tapping, and vibration and may provide relief from stiffness, numbness, pain, constipation, and other health problems. The main purpose is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Other possible benefits include stimulation of circulation, an increase in muscle tone, and a balance of the musculo-skeletal systems. It shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. The usual sequence in which strokes are conducted are Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Vibration, Percussion, and finally passive and active movements (bending and stretching).

Deep tissue massage uses focused, intense pressure to penetrate to deeper layers of muscle, also known as connective tissue. Your skilled therapist will use hands and fingertips in slow strokes to work over the tense area. To avoid making your muscles flinch or spasm, he or she will start quite softly and increase the pressure bit by bit, using a combination of friction moves and direct pressure. They say “no pain, no gain”, and in this case it’s particularly true. It’s not uncommon for you to feel sore for an hour or two after the treatment, but even though you might feel a bit like you’ve been through the ringer, the long-term benefits of easing out all that tension make it more than worthwhile. It’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day following any massage, but especially after the intensity of deeper work as toxins and cellular debris have been released into the blood stream. Good hydration is important in facilitating the excretion of all of these waste products.

Three specific principles are vital to understanding what type of sports massage to apply to an athlete at any given time. These are the “when, what and why” of sports massage: Timing, Technique and Intent. Timing refers to when the massage is given: pre-event or post-event; during recovery; during a maintenance period; or when an athlete suffers an injury that requires rehabilitation. Technique refers to what application you utilize, and can include a number of different techniques: effleurage; friction; pettrisage; vibration; shaking; compression; broadening strokes; direct pressure; cross-fiber friction; range of motion; and stretching. Intent refers to your reason(s) for treatment: as warm-up; to increase blood flow; stimulate neurological pathways; aid recovery from exertion; increase flexibility; improve strength; or improve posture. Every client, athlete or not, is treated as an individual with different unique needs that are specific to them. Our approach is customized to each person’s needs.
