Portrait Of A Woman Holding A Golden LorgnetteA fine mid 19th century portrait of a demure young lady carrying a golden lorgnette. Shes wearing the fashion of the early 1860s, which consists of a bell shaped green dress with sloping shoulders and flared wide sleeves, along with a floral bonnet decorated with roses. Her delicate golden lorgnette (which is a pair of spectacles with a handle) is folded and held between her thumb and index finger. On the reverse, various inscriptions seem to refer to

The painting is housed within a worn frame that’s probably the original and signed/dated in the lower left

His contemporaries considered him to be a little introverted and he opted to dedicate his life to his art rather than settle down with a family

as perhaps this is a commentary on urban industrialisation
